If you drink or drug drive from May 20, you will face tougher penalties than ever before.

New laws in NSW mean that first time low-range drink drivers will have their license suspended on the spot for 3 months, and cop a $561 fine.

The same sanction will be placed on those drivers found with drugs in their system, if confirmed by laboratory analysis.

It's 38 years since the limit has been 0.05, and it is clear that the message about drink driving isn't getting through strong enough.

NSW Minister for Regional Roads and Transport, Paul Toole spoke with Moffee on Triple M, saying that they hope the new laws will help to curb the road toll in the state.
