Founder of PUKA UP Wayne Schwass has defended Fremantle recruit Jesse Hogan on the Thursday Rub, saying the footy industry must take players on “face value”.

Schwass, a spokesman for mental health and suicide prevention, also said it isn't uncommon for people who are going through these conditions to self medicate.

“I believe he cares greatly about his career and greatly about the opportunity that he has got,” the former North Premiership star said.

“I self medicated with alcohol and drugs for two thirds of my career because I was desperate. I didn’t have the skillset or emotional intelligence or maturity to deal with these things productively.”

“I’m not giving Jesse an out because he has to accept responsibility.”

“I’m just trying to educate people (that) when we’re under this sort of emotional stress people will make poor choices.”
