He was the last Australian to score double centuries in an Ashes test and now Matthew Hayden has heaped on the praise for cricket’s prodigal son Steve Smith.

Hayden, who scored twin centuries in the opening test of the 2002-03 Ashes series at the Gabba, told The Big Breakfast this morning that after massive amounts of speculation over the integrity of Australian cricket since sandpaper-gate one of the best things to come from it has been Smith’s redemption.

Smith’s dream return to the test area was capped off after being awarded player of the match for his innings of 144 & 142 as Australia last night bowled out the Poms for 146 on day five thanks to hauls 6/49 and 4/32 from Nathan Lyon and Pat Cummins.

The Queensland great also spoke highly of his great mate, former opening partner and current Australian coach Justin Langer.
