Anyone making the trip home on the Pacific Highway is in for a long trip, with footage emerging showing traffic banked back for kilometres.

Cars are bumper-to-bumper from the Yorke Peninsula as many make their way back from the long weekend.

Traffic is moving at a snail's pace, with the area around Port Wakefield renowned for being a horrible patch of road during the holiday run.

According to Nine News, motorists are expected to spend hours on the road.
