Robert Andrew Giles operates a charter boat at Airlie Beach and is being fined for catching sharks in a protected zone. The 32 year old pleading guilty in the Mackay District Court to three counts of taking an action for a commercial purpose in a Commonwealth reserve yesterday. The offences happened in 2013 and he's been fined five thousand dollars and a conviction’s been recorded.

Mackay vets are raising the alarm over increasing cases of heartworm and paralysis tick cases. Valley Vet Surgery owner Kim McPherson tells the Mercury between 9 am and 12 on Saturday they diagnosed 5 cases of heart worm. While two thirds of all their tick cases this year have been in July.

31 year old body builder Bec Steele from Sarina will represent our country over in the US in November. She's competing in Fitness America in Las Vegas.

Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays will play host to the Queensland Coastal Conference this year. It's on the 5th till the 7th of September. Reef Catchment's Manager Katrina Dent says it's all about discussing issues, share ideas and identify solutions to coastal management.

Changes have been made to the dual-purpose taxi and loading zone in the centre of Wood Street in Mackay. One section will remain a loading zone during the signposted times and the other will be a full-time taxi zone. It follows concerns from taxi drivers that their designated zone was being used by private vehicles after hours.


The Mackay Meteors will be taking on Logan Thunder in the QBL Quarter finals at The Crater tomorrow night. If they win they secure a home semi-final next weekend. While the Meteorettes are taking on Ipswich Force.

There are only three rounds of the Intrust Super cup left and our guys are sitting seventh on the Ladder. Coach Steve Sheppard says Burleigh will be tough to beat -- but they've got some confidence following last week's win.
