A man and woman were rescued yesterday morning in Port Macquarie, at the Hastings River Entrance.

The tourists had headed down for a swim prior to 8am beside the notorious southern Rock Wall, however became caught in a rip.

Fortunately a local surfer went to aid and lifeguards had been training nearby at the time, able to rush out and provide assistance.

Head lifeguard James Turnham says once on shore, the patients who spoke minimal English were very thankful to their saviors.

“This could easily have been a very unfortunate situation. This is where the majority of our rescues in the Port Macquarie-Hastings region occur, and has been the location of multiple fatalities in the past,” he said.

Swimmers are urged to only swim in areas when and where patrols are on duty.

The area is notorious for strong currents, dumping waves, a permanent rip and other unpredictable conditions.
