Local Recognised For Long Service as Justice of the Peace

Toowoomba man George Helon added another award to his collection after being recognised for 25 years of distinguished service as a Justice of the Peace.

Member for Toowoomba South David Janetzki MP presented Mr Helon with the award recently.

Mr Helon is an historian, lecturer, author, genealogist and JP.

“I became a JP in 1994 when I worked for an Aboriginal Native Title Representative in central Queensland,” Mr Helon said.

Mr Helon said some of the people he helped at the time felt intimidated by police and court house staff and preferred to use his JP service for their legal requirements.

“One of my life’s guiding principles is that each person should take some time to help out, assist and nurture others – especially those genuinely less fortunate, disadvantaged and needy,” he said.

Mr Janetzki thanked Mr Helon for his 25 years of service.

“I congratulate and thank George for his dedicated and varied service to our community,” Mr Janetzki said.

“JP’s perform important legal functions and play a pivotal role in our community,” he said.

Mr Helon is an abuse survivor victim advocate.

He also recently performed consultancy work for the Australian television documentary reality genealogy series Who Do You Think You Are? 2019 series.

Mr Helon was honoured to receive the Freedom of the City of London in 2016.
