Heads up: Melbourne's got a storm on the way.

LATEST NEWS:

A band of rain is moving south across the state, and looks to be moving towards Melbourne later this afternoon.

The rain has hit Bendigo and has stretched down to Geelong, according to the Bureau of Meteorology's weather radar.

The bureau has put out a warning across central Victoria, including Melbourne, for severe storms as well as possible heavy rain, large hail and damaging wind gusts.

BOM senior forecaster Chris Goulding said earlier on Tuesday the risk of storms was likely due to the significant humidity.

"We are going to see an increasing risk of thunderstorms as we move further into the afternoon," he said.

"That's sort of prime zone where we are going to see a heightened risk of storm activity as we move through the day."
