A man in his 20s has was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane after being shot in the chest when a firearm was accidentally discharged.

Toowoomba's RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter airlifted the man to the PA Hospital, after the hunting incident, which happened on the Southern Downs yesterday around 9:30am.

The man was reportedly climbing off a quad bike, when another person in the group accidentally discharged a firearm.

The bullet struck the victim on the left side of his chest.

Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) paramedics initially treated the patient, before the rescue chopper arrived on the scene to transport the man to Brisbane.

He was airlifted to hospital in a serious, but stable condition. The rescue crew said the patient was able to talk to his wife, who was also on the scene, before take-off.
