Man Charged Following Early Morning Police Pursuit

Police have charged a man with several offences following a pursuit in Rozelle earlier today.

Leichhardt Local Area Command officers were patrolling about 12.20am this morning when they allegedly detected an unregistered vehicle driving on Darling Street.

Police signalled for the vehicle to stop and when the driver failed to comply, initiated a pursuit.

A short time later, the car was driven into National Street, a no-through road.

The driver, who police will allege was unlicensed, left the vehicle and ran from police who followed on foot.

The man jumped a small fence of a private residence, falling about three metres on the other side, and was found unconscious in the courtyard.

NSW Ambulance paramedics were called to the scene and the 38-year-old man was taken under police guard to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

A search of the man and his vehicle allegedly located a number of counterfeit driver’s licences, credit cards, stolen mail, ammunition and a revolver.

After his treatment in hospital, the man was taken to Newtown Police Station and charged with police pursuit – not stop (Skye’s Law), driving while disqualified, trespass and goods in custody.

The man was refused bail to appear at Newtown Local Court tomorrow.

Inquiries are continuing and further charges are expected.
