Great news for the Margaret River surfing fraternity and the south west's economy.

The Margaret River Pro will stay as one of the world's top surfing events in the world following a new agreement.

The State Government and the World Surf League coming to terms on the event staying at Championship Tour level until at least 2021.

There were some concerns about the event following last year's shark incidents during the event, which was eventually moved and finished in Bali.

This year's event has been moved to May due to those concerns.
