Despite advertised 8:10pm kick-off to last night’s State of Origin Game I, referee Ashley Klein didn’t blow his whistle until 8:15pm. By the time Queensland were celebrating their famous victory at 10:07pm, only a few junior fans would still have been awake.

The general consensus for eons has been that the game’s showpiece event starts way too late and look, as a commercial radio station, we are very aware of the importance of prime-time advertising but Greg Martin has had enough.

Speaking on Triple M Breakfast this morning, ‘Marto’ slammed the late-kick off time, arguing that it’s costing the game its future.

“He (Andrew Abdo) wants to get more eyeballs on footy” Marto lamented

“He says ‘I want more people watching rugby league’ well I tell you what the future of the game would be KIDDIES!

With Game II in Perth slated for a 7:50pm kick-off in the Eastern states Marto put forward a radical suggestion that would allow for the game’s commencement to brought forward into a more family-friendly timeslot.
