A Melbourne man has allegedly been caught trying to cross the Murray with 50 kilograms of cannabis.

The 28-year-old's been charged with drug trafficking and dealing with proceeds of crime.

It’s reported that the Point Cook man was stopped by police on Monday night heading North on the Hume Highway near Wodonga.

Police allege the man was headed from Melbourne to Sydney but failed to produce a permit to cross into New South Wales, they search his car finding the illegal drugs.

The Melbourne man was charged with possession and trafficking of a commercial quantity of cannabis.

He did not appear in the Wodonga Magistrates Court on Tuesday and was instead represented by a lawyer who did not apply for bail.

He has been remanded in custody for a committal hearing on November 11.
