"I think it’s time now to pick up a devastated community," Lucas said.

"8 months of lockdown have devastated this community, as you know, mentally.

"And the grand final means a lot to a lot of people.

"Why can’t we just put our weapons down, relax the rules, even just for the day, and put some parameters around it.

"Let’s say no more than 50 people in venues, or no more than 10 or 15 people in a household, and let us just enjoy a day after 8 months of such horrific, devastating, economic disaster.

"Let’s just celebrate this one day. Is it going to make that much of a difference… is it really gonna start a third wave by having a few people around with some rules, with some sensible rules?"

Lucas said he was concerned that people may ignore the restrictions.

"If the rules don’t make sense, Eddie, what I’m afraid of is people are just going to ignore it," he said.

"They’re going to congregate anyway. They might not congregate in pubs and clubs, but more dangerously they’ll congregate in parks, they will go around to people’s homes, and isn’t it better to have an open and trusting environment where we can control it more effectively?"
