Melbourne and regional Victoria have been rocked by an earthquake just after 9am on Wednesday morning.

Geoscience Australia said the earthquake was detected around Mansfield in the northeast of Victoria.

The earthquake registered at 6.0 with a depth of 10km, with tremors felt as far as Canberra it is potentially the largest earthquake in eastern Australia since settlement.

Buildings across the city have been damaged including businesses on Chapel street.

Geoscientist Mark Quigley has warned that we could get hundreds of aftershocks that could reach a 4.5 magnitude.

He's has advised that Victorians should minimise any risks around their homes that could cause destruction in the event of aftershocks in the next 24-48 hours.
