Commuters are facing absolute chaos heading home after a person was hit and killed on the Sandringham train line.

Thousands are queueing for replacement buses and are stuck on the Princes Bridge after the Sandringham line was suspended due to a woman being hit by a train.

"The yet to be identified woman died at the scene," a police statement said.

Metro Trains said the wait time for buses was approximately 35 minutes, with thousands left queueing for an alternate way home.

"Buses are replacing trains on sections of the Sandringham line due to a person hit by a train," Metro Trains posted.

"Passengers for stations between Elsternwick and Sandringham are advised to take a replacement bus service from the Arts Centre (running express to Elsternwick and then stopping all stations to Sandringham).

"Passengers for stations between South Yarra and Ripponlea are advised to take a replacement bus service from Parliament to South Yarra or catch Yarra Trams route 58 from Queens Street to South Yarra.

"Please then consider alternate transport such as Yarra Trams route 78. Passengers can also consider Yarra Trams route 67 from Swanston Street for Balaclava, Ripponlea and Elsternwick stations. Wait times for buses are approximately 35 minutes."
