The Bureau of Meteorology is warning Melbourne to stay inside as severe weather hits the state.

Temperatures are expected to plummet this afternoon, dropping to four degrees overnight.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Chris Godfred told The Age:

“The core of the coldest air will move over central Victoria late Monday, early Tuesday.

"It will be a good period to stay indoors next week so make the most of the mild weather while you can.

"The story of winters in the south east is that there is always a sting in the tail and we're certainly going to cop that for the end of the weekend and early into next week."

Rain and hail storms are also predicted for the rest of the week.
