Barrier District Police are investigating the cause of a head on crash on the Sturt Highway, near Mallee Fowl Rest Stop.

A silver Nissan Dualis sedan - driven by a Mildura man - collided head on with a Grey Toyota Land Cruiser towing a caravan on Tuesday afternoon.

The 36 year old suffered injuries to his head, arms and chest, and was unable to free himself from the vehicle.

He was taken to Mildura Base Hospital; before being flown to Melbourne in a serious condition.

The driver and passenger of the Toyota Land Cruiser have sustained minor injuries.

Locals who may have witnessed the incident are being urged to come forward and contact Dareton Police, or make an anonymous report via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
