Carlton forward Mitch McGovern will be sidelined for a few weeks after suffering a small fracture in his back.

McGovern sustained a small, non-displaced fracture of the back during the club's open training session on Thursday.

Scans on Friday confirmed the injury that would likely see the 23-year-old return to training after the Christmas break.

Carlton's head of football Brad Lloyd said this injury was likely a one-to-two-week injury during the season.

“Scans conducted yesterday revealed there was a small, non-displaced fracture. Often with this type of injury players can miss 1-2 games during the season, while for others it’s not uncommon to not miss any at all," he said.

“Mitch will obviously continue to be monitored during this next period, however we’re confident he’ll be back training with the rest of the team following the Christmas break."

McGovern was recruited to the club from Adelaide in this year's trade period.
