More Than 50,000 Melbourne Properties Without Power

Update: Crews have restored power to more than 38,000 customers across the United Energy network this morning following severe winds, the company has said in a statement:

"The windstorm across the southern areas have blown branches across lines and caused power outages in different parts of the network.

Extra crews have been brought on to fix fallen wires and restore supply.

We expect the majority of the 3800 remaining customers in the United Energy network, 2000 in CitiPower and 2200 in Powercor to be back on supply by early afternoon.

Please stay away from fallen power lines and report them to our call centres. 

Thank you to customers for their patience and we will keep people updated on restoration times via text messages and on our websites."

Earlier: More than 50,000 properties in Melbourne are without power as wild weather hits the city. 

The SES has already received nearly 400 calls for assistance for trees down and powerlines down, blocking roads.

Over 40,000 of the homes affected by power outages are in the city’s south east

A severe weather warning has been issued due to a strong cold front which will cross Victoria this morning and early afternoon. 

Damaging winds up to 90 to 100km/h will develop over western Victoria this morning before extending to the central and eastern parts across the morning.
