Most Of Western Sydney is in the dark this afternoon - with wild weather sweeping through Sydney and leaving 27,000 homes and businesses without power.

The suburbs affected are from St Marys through to Mt Druitt and the Hills District.

Power is also out to other parts of Sydney including 600 AUSGRID customers in parts of Berowra and Berowra Heights.

Firefighters and the SES are also responding to hundreds of calls for help this afternoon for trees down and roofs damaged

Some of the suburbs affected include St Marys, Orchard Hills, Whalan, Mt Druitt, Hebershem, Penrith and Blacktown... with lightning strikes also causing some damage at Castle Hill as well.

Becky Gollings from the SES says there’s been a lot of trees down, “We noticed around Werrington Train Station a  tree has crashed onto the platform there so we’ve got our crews on the way to assist, and also in a number of homes in Western Sydney where a number of trees have come down on their homes or on their cars.”

Ms Gollings is urging people in the thick of it to play it safe tonight.

“The safest thing for people to remember is to stay indoors, don’t be out on the roads if you don’t have to be. If you are out on the roads, please drive to the conditions.”

Emergency Crews are also warning people to steer clear of fallen powerlines, with reports of wires down right across Sydney.
