Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley showed his class by wrapping his arms around his distraught runner after yesterday’s narrow grand final loss to the West Coast Eagles.

Collingwood runner and former Hawthorn player Alex Woodward was blaming himself for the defeat after he got in the road of Collingwood youngster Jaidyn Stevenson in the third quarter. This blunder from Woodward resulted in an Elliot Yeo mark and goal and gave West Coast the lead in a crucial time of the match.

Buckley, who has been praised for his easy-going approach to his coaching this year, kept a cool-head after the match and consoled Woodward in what was a fine example of leadership.

“Woody’s shattered, he’s blaming him self,” Buckley said in his post-game presser.

“It’s one of those marginal situations that happens in a game.”

“The reason I grabbed him is he can’t be blaming himself. Things happen in life, things happen in football.”

“He was trying to get out of the way, and it didn’t work.”
