The body representing councils across the South West has welcomed an announcement by the NSW Government to introduce new laws to allow councils to create new Join Organisations next year.

President of Local Government NSW, Keith Rhoades says he’s delighted at the Government’s response to LGNSW’s persistent calls to get the Join Oorganisations up and running.

Cr Rhoades says they were originally planned to be rolled out during 2017 following the success of a five-region pilot program during 2015-16; and since then, they’ve made repeated calls for their introduction.

He says though LGNSW will continue to advocate that councils are best placed to know which regional communities are most relevant to their needs and interests.

3.3 million dollars in seed funding is set to be provided by the Government to support councils choosing to participate.

He also noted that the proposed boundaries included in the announcement align with NSW Planning Regional boundaries.

Council membership of a Joint Organisation will be voluntary.
