The old BHP Steelworks site at Mayfield is a step closer to being reused for something else.

Work has now begun on cleaning up the final, 52 hectare section of land. It marks the last stage of the decade-long $100 million remediation project.

Hunter Development Corporation CEO Michael Cassel says he's looking forward to finally seeing the land in use again.

"When the remediation is complete we can move ahead with new general industrial employment-generating uses for the site," he said

The final stage will take 60 staff 30 weeks to complete.
