The state government has tweaked its plans for the final stage of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass from Jesmond to Rankin Park.
After lobbying from staff at John Hunter Hospital, the government has now decided to build a $13 million full interchange connecting the hospital with the bypass.
Previously, only traffic going to and from the north would've been able to access the hospital.
“The interchange will improve traffic flow across the western suburbs of Newcastle and connect key regional destinations, including Bennetts Green, Charlestown and Jesmond shopping centres, John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle University and the Pacific Highway,” Health Minister Brad Hazzard said.
“It will also establish an alternative path of travel to the hospital in case of emergency or critical incident."
It's expected the road will greatly ease traffic congestion around the hospital entrance on Lookout Road.
