New rules for trucks on the M1

You won't see any trucks in the fast-lanes from today.

New laws are now in effect, restricting vehicles that weigh more than 4.5 tonnes to the two left-hand lanes of the M1, between Robina and Springwood.

From August 1, drivers will cop a $162 fine and lose points off their license, if caught in the right-hand lanes but acting Transport Minister Steven Miles said it's unlikely truckies will be hit with fines straight away, as they get used to the new rules.

"Our truckies are professional drivers; they're used to complying with the road rules but these fines are there if they don't," he said. 

The news laws are being put in place in an effort to reduce congestion on the highway ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

Carrara truckie Daniel told Heather, Dan and Ben he was trying reserve judgement until after the rules are properly trialed, but he wasn't too optimistic they would work.

"I honestly don't believe it's going to be a good thing at all," he said.

"I think it's going to cause more problems than good".
