Local businesses need to make sure they're following Victoria's tough new smoking laws, otherwise fines worth $7773 apply.
If you're a smoker caught lighting up near diners the penalty is around $777.
From August 1 2017, smoking is only allowed outside at your local pub, cafe or restaurant if food's not being served.
Small snacks and beverages don't fall under the rule.
Venues can create specific alfresco eating and smoking areas as long as they're 4 metres apart, or a 2.1-metre wall separates diners and smokers.
Council inspectors are responsible for implementing fines.
