New technology is on the way to help ease Sydney traffic, with trucks set to be given the ability to communicate with traffic lights.

A three-month trial is underway, which will see trucks given a 'priority' pass through major intersections.

A wireless transmitter will connect with lights, extending the 'green' period to allow the truck to make it through the intersection in time.

"We need to be able to use technology to get the very best out of our roads," New South Wales Roads Minister Melinda Pavey said, reports 9News.

Some 112 trucks have been given the tech, with nearly 100 traffic lights to have the units installed.

These include Pennant Hills Road, King Georges Road and Parramatta Road.
