Jacinda Ardern has confirmed New Zealand will toughen its gun laws after 50 people were murdered in a terror attack at two mosques in Christchurch.

Ms Ardern has encouraged New Zealanders to surrender their semi-automatic weapons through a voluntary amnesty, as her government works through changes to firearm laws over the next week.

She said while the cabinet had agreed in principle, the details were yet to be finalised.

“These are the kinds of issues, that add layers of complexity to issues around gun control law changes and management. Of course if you reflect on what Australia did, that was involved,” she said.

“Those will all be details I’ll be announcing in the very near future. We are of one mind. We are absolutely united as a cabinet.”

"To make our community safer, the time to act is now," Ms Ardern told reporters on Monday.
