Melbourne’s Night Bus service will not run on New Year’s Eve – due to the evening falling on a Sunday.

The decision not the schedule extra services will leave those who don’t live near a train line having to pay for a taxi or highly inflated Uber prices.

A spokeswoman for Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan has argued that the Night Bus services would not run this year because New Year's Eve falls on Sunday, and the late night services run on Friday and Saturday nights.

"As New Year's Eve falls on a Sunday, Night Network services do not operate," the spokeswoman said.

"Each year Public Transport Victoria analyses the patronage and performance of services from New Year's Eve before making changes to the services we provide to passengers."

In the past, late night bus services have run on New Year's Eve, regardless of the day.

A PTV spokesperson said "more than 540 extra trains" would run on Sunday night. Trips will be free of charge from 6pm on December 31 until 6am the next day.
