NSW recorded 1022 locally acquired COVID cases on Tuesday.

Unfortunately, there were also ten deaths with six people not vaccinated, two people who had received one dose of a vaccine and two elderly people who were fully vaccinated.

Health Minister Brad Hazzard also confirmed that the Tweed, Byron Bay and Kempsey LGA’s will be placed into lockdown from 5pm Tuesday.

"Unfortunately, we’ve had some cases in the northern part of the state,' he said.

"It will be initially for seven days. And it will be reviewed. Public health will be out encouraging, obviously, testing and I certainly, as Health Minister, encourage everybody in those areas to take this very seriously"

Under consideration since Monday, NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro had earlier confirmed that an authorised worker with COVID flew from Sydney to Ballina on Saturday and was potentially infectious for several days in the region.

“The person was an authorised worker; it was part of their employment. They had all the approvals to leave Sydney and they did so, and they followed the rules. Unfortunately, these things happen."

- John Barilaro

Mr Barilaro confirmed the person who picked the worker up at the airport had also tested positive.

The stay-at-home health orders apply to anyone who has been in Kempsey since September 14 and Byron or Tweed since September 18.

Meantime, Mr Hazzard implored locals to “take this very seriously”, amid concerns over low testing and vaccination rates in the region.

It comes as it's revealed only between 30-39 per cent of Byron residents are fully vaccinated, compared to 90 per cent in parts of Sydney.
