NSW will trial a home quarantine pilot program as the state gets ready to open up international borders.

NSW Health will team up with NSW Police to lead a seven-day home quarantine program for 175 people.

All 175 people will need to be fully vaccinated and will be chosen based off a specific risk assessment framework.

The program will not be limited to NSW residents with Qantas aircrew and some non-Australian residents.

Participants will only be required to isolate for seven days.

Participants will need to utilise a home-quarantine safe app to check-in and will be subjected to random physical police checks.

The outcome of the NSW home-quarantine pilot will help to determine the prospect of future quarantine programs.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the NSW pilot is the next step towards opening up our borders.

“This is the next step in our plan to safely reopen, and to stay safely open,” he said.

“NSW has carried the lion’s share of quarantining returning Australians and will be leading the way with this trial that could set the standard for the next phases of the way we live with COVID-19.”

The Prime Minister said if the home-quarantine pilot is a success, this could mean more work for thousands of Australians.

“This could mean more families and friends being able to reunite more quickly, more business being able to be done here, and more workers for key industries being able to fill critical jobs.”

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said while hotel quarantine has played an important part in keeping us safe throughout the pandemic, it is time to find new ways to live with the virus.

“Hotel quarantine has been an important line of defence throughout this pandemic but as we move towards our vaccination targets, we have to look at new ways of doing things,” she said.

“The safety of the community remains our number one priority and the rules around this home quarantine pilot will be strictly enforced.”
