Oakey residents are seeking around $200 million in compensation from the Federal Government over Oakey’s contaminated ground water supply.

450 residents have signed up to fight the Department of Defence in a class action over their use of firefighting foam which made its way into the ground water and exposing residents to the toxic chemical.

Lawyer for the class action Peter Shannon says the class action was filed with considerable reluctance and residents would be open to a settlement outside of the courts.

The water contamination has been an issue the locals have been fighting since 2014.
