You read it here first yesterday, and today we can confirm it.

Ford is back, and this time it's bringing the Mustang to Supercars racing in 2019.

Yep, next year.

DJR Team Penske and Tickford Racing will race the 2-door Mustangs next year after getting the official nod from Ford's head office.

Their existing 5.0 litre V8 engines run in the Falcon will be bolted into the new 2-door race car due for development over a controlled Supercars chassis.

“There’s been a lot of speculation and calls for Mustang to be on the track," said Ford Australia boss Graeme Whickman.

"As a Ford Performance model that’s raced around the world, it’s fitting that Australia’s most popular sports car should be on our race tracks.”

Cars with two doors got the green light to race in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship under new Gen2 rules that helped Holden build a hatchback Commodore ZB.

The Falcon's been flying the flag for Ford for 26 years but the Mustang is no slouch pony, having collected five straight titles in the preceding Australian Touring Championship in the 1960s.

Tickford co-owner Rod Nash is understandably stoked his team's been tossed the keys to the iconic car.

“Mustang is Ford’s halo brand and with its 54th birthday it keeps recording more milestones, but I think having a Mustang Supercar is going to be a very significant one for the brand in this country."

“This is a landmark day for Australian motorsport and the teams involved.”

We'll leave the last word to Ford legend and Team DJR Penske co-owner Dick Johnson.

"Throughout the entire history of this team, we’ve never run anything but a Ford, and this announcement today is fantastic," said Johnson.

“The fact that we will be able to build and race a Mustang in the 2019 Supercars Championship is music to my ears."

“It’s great to be back in the Ford fold, and we’ll continue to ensure that we give Ford – and its millions of fans – something to cheer about.”
