The man who killed Gold Coast grandfather Trevor Duroux in a one-punch attack at Coolangatta has been sentenced to spend six-and-a-half years behind bars.

Tristan Mataora Heather was sentenced after pleading guilty to unlawful striking causing death on Thursday, and was ordered to serve at least 80 per cent of his sentence.

He will then be eligible for parole and will be deported back to New Zealand.

It's after Heather hit Mr Duroux outside a Coolangatta pub in December 2015 while out celebrating his 18th birthday, knocking him to the ground.

The 40-year-old's life support was switched off by family 10 days later.
