The Palaszczuk Government has invested a record amount in school maintenance, seeing local schools in the Rockhampton area greatly benefiting from it.

Member for Rockhampton, Barry O'Rourke MP says local state schools had undergone extensive capital and maintenance works over the December-January holiday period.

“Schools in Rockhampton and Keppel have shared in almost $1.5 million for improvements to classrooms and other facilities with most work carried out during the school holidays to ensure classes were not disrupted.

“We want our state school students to have the best-possible classrooms to make the most of their education,” he said.

Member for Keppel, Brittany Lauga MP said the funding was part of the government’s $765 million school infrastructure program and it will help state schools stay on top of maintenance needs.

“This funding will help ensure students have access to quality education facilities,”

“Our school maintenance program is not only building better schools in the area but also providing valuable jobs for tradies and training opportunities for apprentices,"

“At least 10 percent of all maintenance work carried out on state schools has been done by apprentices ensuring we continue to develop skills locally,” she said.

Some of the school maintenance projects in the area include:

  • Over $550,000 to upgrade the hall at Yeppoon SHS (Keppel)
  • Almost $20,000 for the exterior repaint at Parkhurst SS (Keppel)
  • Over $200,000 for the refurbishment of classrooms at Glenmore SS (Rockhampton)
  • Over $100,000 for the refurbishment of Block 7 rooms amenities and roof at Allenstown SS (Rockhampton)
