Palm Beach and North Palm Beach have been closed after an earlier shark sighting this morning.

Lifeguards on patrol saw the suspected great white shark at 9.20am today, with a Surf Life Saving NSW representative confirming that the beach would re-open once the area was declared safe.

"(Lifeguards) must have spotted something quite a bit larger than (a small reef shark) to close the beach," the spokesperson said.

"We do often see them at the very southern-end of the beach, near the ocean pool and kiddie’s corner; they’re usually small reef sharks that people see while snorkelling or swimming."
