An investigation is underway into a paragliding accident in the Hunter Valley over the weekend.

A 44 year old man was being towed behind a boat on Lake St Clair on Sunday afternoon, when he lost control and landed heavily on the shoreline of a small island.

Police say he was performing an emergency training drill at the time.

He was airlifted off the island by the NSW Ambulance helicopter and flown to John Hunter Hospital suffering non-life threatening injuries.

"It could've been much more serious. He was lucky to be able to get to the landing and escape serious injury," Inspector Jo Schultz said.
