Some Gold Coast school have banned phone usage on campus in a bid to stamp out cyber bullying.

Students at Pimpama State Secondary College and Upper Coomera State College have to keep their devices tucked away in their bags, even during lunch breaks.

The principal of Pimpama State told News Corp he's hoping the move will improve their social skills, blaming social media for kids' lack empathy, inability to speak face-to-face or read body language.

Students caught breaking the rules will have their phones confiscated until the end of the day, while repeat offenders risk earning detention.
