The storm clean up in Kurri Kurri is expected to last several days after the town was smashed by 100 km/h winds.
Roofs were blown off dozens of buildings, trees came crashing down onto cars, while power lines came down.
More than 1,300 homes and businesses around Kurri, Abermain, Weston, Loxford and Sawyers Gully spent the night in the dark.
About 500 were still without power on Tuesday morning.
The roof of the Kurri Kurri Community Centre partially collapsed and will remain closed until further notice.
SES crews have another busy day ahead of them as they continue to work through more than 170 jobs.
While the Education Department has closed Kurri Kurri Public School on Tuesday because of the storm damage.
