The overnight fire at beloved Hobart café, Pilgrim Coffee, has been deemed accidental.

Firefighters evacuated 20 people from accommodation above the shop last night after the alert was sounded at around 10:50pm.

Tasmania Fire Service Regional Fire Investigator, Matt Lowe, said "'Working smoke alarms have alerted the residents and given them valuable time to escape the fire.'

TFS investigations have revealed 'The fire was caused by a mechanical or electrical fault in an under bench fridge.'

Mr Lowe said damage is estimated at $500,000.

The fire occurred just 1 day before the shop’s 7th birthday with Emergency Services taking around an hour to control the fire with no-one seriously injured, although some suffered from smoke inhalation.

Will Priestly, award-winning barista and owner of Pilgrim Coffee, was obviously devastated by the incident, and expressed concern for the future of his 15 employees.

Customers of the coffee shop took to social media to share their grief at the news, calling it a sad day for the coffee lovers of Hobart.
