In breaking news, there are reports that a plane has been struck by lightning shortly after leaving Sydney.

According to 9 News, the plane was travelling from Sydney to Port Arthur when the incident happened.

The QantasLink plane has since returned to Sydney airport, turning around over the Hunter Valley.

It returned just after 10.10am.
