A man has been arrested after a police pursuit in the Toowoomba area.

Police will allege about 6.00am on April 19, a man entered a home on Weymouth Street, Bundamba and stole a silver Nissan Pathfinder.

At 12.40pm, the man allegedly attended a service station on Jones Road, Bell Bird Park, where he stole a quantity of petrol and drove off without paying.

At 9.20pm, the man allegedly approached a 47-year-old woman in Dunlop Road, Esk saying he had been involved in a traffic crash, he pretended to be injured. The woman offered assistance him, the man has allegedly threatened the woman, demanding her car saying he had a knife.

The man has then attempted to gain entry to the woman’s house, assaulting her in the process by pushing her out of the way, he has then gained access to the woman’s garage, taking off in her car.

As the man was driving away in the stolen car, he lost control of the vehicle, crashing it into a fence, he was seen running along Dunlop Street.

At 9.45pm, the man allegedly approached another house on Dunlop Street. He confronted the residents saying he had hurt his back in a car accident.

A 65-year-old man at the home offered the offender support, he has  entered the property.  Upon entry he has proceeded to steal a set of car keys, made his way to the garage gaining access to a beige Mitsubishi Grandis. The 65-year-old man and a 71-year-old woman tried to stop the man from stealing their vehicle,  resulting in the man driving the car into a fridge and the garage causing damage to both.

At 12.00am on April 20, the stolen car was sighted travelling on Euston Road at Glenvale where police successfully deployed a tyre deflation device. The man continued to drive whilst being pursued by police - the pursuit was later called off.

At midday, police arrested a 22-year-old Gatton man. The man was transported to the Toowoomba watchhouse where he was charged with:

  • three counts each of robbery whilst armed
  • unlawful use of a motor vehicle
  • two counts each of enter dwelling with intent
  • wilful damage and one count each of common assault
  • stealing
  • fail to provide specimen of breath.

The man is due to appear in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court today.
