Possible Public Vote To Decide Future Of The G:Link

A member of the state opposition is calling for a public vote on stage 3A of the Light Rail.

Mermaid Beach MP Ray Stevens demanded a referendum in Parliament on Tuesday, to find out if locals actually wanted the G:Link extended to down to Burleigh along the Gold Coast Highway.

He said considering the potential economic and traffic impacts of the tram tracks, residents and businesses should get the final say on the $600 million project.

Transport Minister Mark Bailey has fobbed off the idea though, saying it would simply delay the extension from getting built, adding that recent consultations had already shown the people wanted the project to progress.

"All the public polling has shown that the support from Gold Coast residents is very high for the light rail project; around 80 percent," he said.

"All Ray Stevens and the Queensland LNP need to do is listen to Gold Coasters; they want Light Rail".
