A severe storm has dumped tennis-ball sized hail near the Queensland town of Kingaroy.

The dangerous storm system is affecting communities north and south of the inland town as it heads towards the coast.

The Bureau of Meteorology said tennis ball-sized hail, up to seven centimetres in diameter, had been reported, with a second severe storm also affecting Chinchilla, about 170km west of Kingaroy.
