Race Begins To Bid For Second Gold Coast Casino & Tourism Hub

The race has begun for developers to pitch ideas for a new world class tourism hub on the Gold Coast.

The Queensland government wants any proposal to include luxury hotels, new entertainment venues, high-end dining and a convention space, while it is also widely tipped to include a second casino for the city.

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said developers would be able to propose a location for the hub, but promised it wouldn't be on Wavebreak Island or The Spit.

"Where they think there is a location suitable on the Gold Coast that can deliver connectivity to public transport," said Ms Jones.

"But also will be able to house significant public infrastructure, and open up areas of the Gold Coast to the public, as well as delivering world-class facilities."

The project was expected to create more than 6000 local jobs and attract an additional one million tourists to the city each year.

Mayor Tom Tate claimed council was committed to working with the Labor government to deliver the hub for the city, and would help advise on the best location.

"While tourism continues to grow, unless we invest in new opportunities we risk losing market share," said Cr Tate.

"The previous state government created this casino licence to help Gold Coast reach our tourism potential.

"We know a global tourism hub will support thousands of new jobs for Gold Coast and has the potential to take tourism to a whole new level."

Potential proponents will have until April to register their interest.
