RACQ Slams Talk Burleigh Light Rail Extension Should Be Cut Down

The state's peak motoring body has clammed the political war-of-words raging over the funding and best path for Stage 3A of the light rail.

Local federal minister Karen Andrew suggested this week the planned extension from Broadbeach to Burleigh should be cut back by 700 metres due to both the Coalition government and Labor refusing to budge on their $112 million election commitments.

The RACQ on Thursday labelled the squabble a "political bunfight" and slammed the suggestion the track should be shortened.

"There’s talk of a scope change, but it’s too late for that," said Head of Public Policy Rebecca Michael.

"All tiers of government agreed to it before the business case was approved.

"Whoever forms the next Federal Government needs to immediately meet with the State Government and Gold Coast Council to get this funding row fixed and get construction on Stage 3A started."

Mayor Tom Tate wants another $45 million from either federal or state government to get the project moving.
