The mining industry is talking up latest figures showing how much it contributes to the Hunter's economy.

The NSW Minerals Council's latest Expenditure Survey of 28 member mining companies found they directly injected $4.3 billion into our local economy in 2017/18.

That's about 18 per cent of the Gross Regional Product of the Hunter's economy.

$1.6 billion was spent on wages for 14,095 full-time employees and $2.6 billion in purchases from 4,168 local businesses.

The number of direct Hunter mining jobs was up by 1,441 on the previous 12 months.

“These survey results show that mining’s contribution to the Hunter economy remains strong, with jobs and the number of local business supported by our members increasing,” NSW Minerals Council CEO, Stephen Galilee said.
