A staggering $342 million is sitting in super accounts waiting to be found and claimed by Hunter workers who have changed jobs.

Latest figures from the Australian Taxation Office show workers living in Maitland's postcode of 2320 have the highest amount of retirement money they don't know about, nearly $19 million.

Maitland has 3,781 "lost" nest eggs worth just under $5,000 on average.

Next on the list is Wallsend ($17m), Charlestown ($16m), East Maitland ($15.8m) and Cessnock ($15.4m).
