Young locals looking to expand their education and training are being encouraged to apply for support under the Rural Chances Scholarship program.

The scheme works to support students across the State under the Macpherson Smith Rural Foundation.

The scheme offers scholarships valued at $5000, with a further 10 scholarships of up to $2000 to assist rural students in gaining a qualification.

Scholarship recipients can also receive extra care and guidance with mentoring, networking and leadership opportunities offered.

Applicants must be between the ages of 16 to 24 years old, and be planning to train in an area where there are skills shortages in rural and regional Victoria.

Previous recipients of this scholarship include students from Mildura and Birchip.

The initiative will be accepting applications until Wednesday December 20th.
